DVD Drive not found in Windows Vista

Posted in: Misc

My officemate lend me his dvd, a tv series of Heroes when I found out that my dvd drive is not in mycomputer’s list. I checked it in the device manager that my MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA device has a yellow question mark beside it. I looked the properties of the device, there’s an error message that says “Windows can’t load the driver for this device. The driver might be damaged or missing.” I uninstalled and reboot my computer hoping that it will reinstall the dvd driver, unfortunately it did the same thing. I grab one of my boot disc to know if my dvd is busted, but it loads fine and it read the drive. So I concluded that if it works outside windows then definitely its a Windows problem. Then I started blaming again that I’m using Windows Vista, argh! Eversince I bought a new laptop with a Vista installed, I keep on encountering a lot of problems and sometimes I can’t install some programs that I normally used in Windows XP.

Anyway back to my problem, I remembered when I was still working in DELL as technical support agent I encountered the same problem with one of my customers. I used to delete something in the registry, but cant figure-out what that is. I searched the support site of microsoft and found this Article ID:314060 Here’s a simple steps to do it.

Tweak your Registry Editor

1. Click Start > Run.
2. Type regedit in the Open text box and click OK.
3. In the Registry Editor dialog box, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class and select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} key, which appears as a folder.
4. Select File > Export (Windows XP and Vista)
5. In the Export Registry File dialog box, select Selected Branch under Export Range, name the file (for example, CDDVDkey.reg), and click Save to save the file to the Desktop.
6. In the right panel of the Registry Editor, select the LowerFilters line, and then choose Edit > Delete. Click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box.
7. Select the UpperFilters line, and then choose Edit > Delete. Click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box.
8. Close the Registry Editor.
9. Restart Windows.

So far everything is up and running. I’m hoping this fixed my problem. ;)
